SomCom is the short name for Somerset Computers and has offices in Shepton Mallet and also in the Cotswolds. SomCom is a family owned company with David, Alan and Tom all playing a major part of the companies success.

SomCom have been structuring unstructured data and adding value to data for over 30 years, developing in-house data manipulation software tools since the early 1980s for processing large amounts of data.

This foundation of data manipulation experience and skills enabled SomCom to develop an innovative and cost effective solution for full-text searching of digitised repositories. We are committed to providing high value and affordable customised technology services for small, medium and large not for profit professional and academic societies, institutes and associations.

Alan Turner (Managing Director)

BTEC HND in Business Information Technology

SomCom is headed up by Alan Turner (MD) with over 10 years sales experience in the printing and typesetting industry, and six years in sales management, Alan has a very good knowledge of publishers’ and societies’ requirements. Alan is involved in sales as well as taking responsibility for the direction of the business. Alan joined SomCom in 2001 after realising that many societies were not unlocking there archives because they were put off by the huge costs associated with full text keying. Since joining the business Alan has worked alongside his Father and Brother to develop turnkey solutions for a niche market.

David Pottinger (Senior Project Manager/project consultant)

BSc Information Systems

David has been heavily involved in the development of the Teesside NENA project and has managed much of the process from inception through to delivery. David is currently managing a major project for SomCom to build the back end system for an online repository/ book bank for one of the world largest printers.
